Data infrastructure for marketing is the prerequisite, not the polish. Paul Waithaka on the chain from click to closed sale, and what breaks without it.
Data infrastructure for marketing is not the finishing touch, it is the precondition. Watch Paul Waithaka, Account Executive at Zero Company, tell Michele Brasfield exactly what has to be traceable before a campaign can claim it produced revenue: a lead arrives from Google, hits a landing page, fills a form, enters the CRM, becomes a sale. Break any link in that chain and, in his words, anything after that is just guesswork.
He has a reason for caring. Close to 20 years in marketing and more than one round of cuts, all of them landing on a department that was read as a cost center because nobody could see what it returned.
The best story in the conversation is the one where the numbers embarrass him. A client photographs marriage proposals, and Paul assumed the peak was Christmas and Valentine's Day. The data said July through October, ahead of Thanksgiving, because people want to arrive at the holiday already engaged. His verdict on himself: my intuition was way off, I will not even lie about that.
Also on screen:
• Why the hardest part of the job is personalities, not campaigns
• Running a short-term revenue campaign and a long-term brand campaign side by side
• Reading high clicks with no conversions as a targeting problem
• Where sales over-promising collides with what product can actually ship
• Reducing a client's budget through the tariff disruption, and what that bought later
